The
town of Hollis, New Hampshire received a wonderful gift: a 1760s
English-style barn. The town decided to convert the barn into a
community center. But how could they keep its historic integrity
while accommodating the needs of a 21st century building? For example,
the barn needed a new roof, yet the roof ought to look like it belonged
on a 200-year-old structure. The Lawrence Barn Committee chose Viking
Roofing, Inc., to design and install the roof.
Jim Cram, Chair of the Committee recalls, “In my early meetings
with Jeff Taylor I was so impressed with his knowledge of how to
detail the various flashings and connections required for our job
that I became very comfortable with assigning Viking Roofing the
project. Then, as the job was installed and they were able to make
a 200-year-old barn with a 100 foot-ridge look perfectly straight,
I knew I could recommend them to anyone.
”Viking Roof selected a metal roof with a color that would
blend with the time period while meeting modern codes and expectations.
We custom fabricated the different fascia profiles. Then we added
subdued stainless steel snow rails above the doors to protect community
members from rain and snow as they entered the building.
The Town of Hollis is now enjoying their 21st century community
center in a building restored to the glory of 200 years ago.
